That’s not just a tech check with my audience—it’s an opportunity for humor. Once I've gotten some responses, I continue:

“I once invited an older man sitting way in the back of one of my presentations to sit closer to the front because I didn't think he'd hear me. He said, ‘Don’t worry, Jeff. I’ve got a $5,000 hearing aid.’ I said, ‘Wow! That's an expensive hearing aid. What kind is it?’ He said, ‘Oh, about 9 o’clock.’”
